New Beetle Buyer's Guide: What to Check
Everything to inspect before buying a used New Beetle Hatchback, from engine health to service-history red flags.
Service History
Look for documented timing-belt and water-pump work (due around 5 years/80k on the 1.8T), regular oil changes, and brake-switch replacements. A full specialist history is worth paying a premium for.
Engine Inspection
Have a pre-purchase inspection check for oil leaks around the cam chain tensioner and valve cover, coolant-flange weeping, and any misfire codes that point to coil packs or the MAF sensor.
Electrical Check
Cycle every switch, check all the brake lights (a common failure), and make sure the airbag light goes out — a stuck-on light usually means seat-belt buckle wiring.
Bodywork and Rust
Check the wheel arches, sills and rear valance for corrosion, especially on cars that haven't been garaged. The flower-vase dashboard is iconic but check the dash top for sun-cracking.
