The VW Crafter (2006–2016, first generation) is VW’s biggest commercial vehicle — co-developed with Mercedes-Benz and sized for serious payloads and big conversions. From race-car transporters to camper conversions and tippers, it is the platform for large-scale VW builds.
Its sheer size means the styling aftermarket is more functional than the smaller vans — but there is strong support for alloy wheels (with van-rated load ratings), LED light bars, livery/graphics, and camper conversions. Mechanical parts are shared with the Sprinter, so servicing is well supported.

Best Engines
2.5 TDI (163 PS)
The strong performer — best for towing and loaded conversions; check EGR and injector history.
2.0 TDI (163 PS, from 2011)
Cleaner and more economical than the 2.5 — the modern pick for a daily-driven Crafter.
2.0 TDI (136 PS)
A solid all-rounder for standard commercial use and campervan conversions.
What to Check Before You Buy
- !On the 2.5 TDI, check the EGR cooler and injectors — failures are common on neglected vans.
- !If the van is used for short trips, check the DPF isn’t clogged — it needs regular motorway runs.
- !Check the gross weight — Crafters over 3.5t may require a C1 licence to drive.
- !Inspect the rear axle / air suspension for leaks on self-levelling models.
Common Issues
- 2.5 TDI: EGR cooler and injector failures — check service history.
- DPF clogging on short-trip / low-load use — needs regular motorway runs.
- Dual-mass flywheel wear on manual vans.
- Wiring / body-control module faults behind the dash.
- Rear axle / air-suspension leaks on self-levelling models.
