The VW Transporter T5 (2003–2010) is the van that defined a generation of VW build culture. From slammed panel vans to the camper-ready California, it comes in dozens of configurations and has the biggest, most active aftermarket of any VW van — body kits, steel wheels, air-ride and lowering kits, led bars, roof conversions and more.
Because the T5 platform is shared across Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and California, mechanical parts are plentiful and there is a huge catalogue of styling and suspension upgrades. It is the ideal base whether you want a clean daily, a show van or a full campervan conversion.

The performance diesel — strong, tuneable and sounds great; check camshaft history.
2.0 TDI bi-turbo (180 PS)
The modern pick — cleaner emissions and the best base for a remap on later T5s.

The indestructible workhorse — cheap to run, perfect for a high-mileage daily.
What to Check Before You Buy
- !On the 2.5 TDI, ask about camshaft wear and oil quality — a documented cam is a big plus.
- !Verify the DSG (if fitted) had its oil changed every 40k miles — neglected mechatronic units are costly.
- !Check for water ingress around the sliding-door seals and scuttle drains — damp leads to electrical faults.
- !Inspect front ball joints and suspension on lowered or heavily loaded vans.

- 1.9 TDI: dual-mass flywheel and EGR cooler failures on high-mileage vans.
- 2.5 TDI: camshaft lobe wear — check cam history and oil quality.
